When the air conditioning is already losing to the afternoon sun, a 400-degree oven is the last thing your kitchen needs. These six dinners come together with a knife, a cutting board and whatever's in the fridge. No stove. No oven. Swipe for dinners even picky eaters will finish.

Almost no kid turns this one down. Spread peanut butter on whole-grain bread, layer on banana slices and cut each sandwich into triangles or small squares. Yogurt, berries and a handful of pretzels round out the plate. A thin drizzle of honey makes it sweeter, though the CDC says to skip honey for babies under age 1. Dealing with a peanut allergy? Sunflower seed butter works the same way.

The only real work here is assembly. Pull the meat off a store-bought rotisserie chicken and toss it with bagged Caesar salad, Parmesan and Caesar dressing. Then stuff it all into mini pitas. Kids who won't go near lettuce can eat the chicken, cheese and pita separately. Add berries or sliced melon on the side.

Set out tortillas and let everyone make their own. The fillings: sliced turkey, a mild cheese, avocado, shredded lettuce and thin cucumber slices. Picky eaters leave off whatever they don't like, and nobody has to negotiate. Want more flavor? Spread cream cheese on the tortilla first. Put out hummus or ranch for dipping, plus grapes, apple slices or baby carrots.
Call it a snack plate and dinner suddenly sounds fun. Load a big platter with cheese cubes, sliced turkey or chicken, crackers, cucumber rounds, baby carrots, grapes and apple slices, with hummus, ranch or peanut butter for dipping. Everyone picks. You still end up with a surprisingly balanced meal. Cookie cutters turn cheese and deli meat into stars and hearts, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends cutting grapes into quarters for kids under 4.

Very thin apple slices give a standard ham and cheese some crunch and a little sweetness. Layer thin-sliced ham and mild cheddar on bread (toast it if you can stand the heat), then tuck in the apple. Kids who balk at fruit in a sandwich can have the slices on the side. Serve with grapes, cucumber slices and a yogurt dip. Cleanup is one knife and a cutting board.

All the pizza flavor, none of the oven time. Spread pizza sauce straight from the jar onto a flour tortilla, sprinkle on shredded mozzarella and cover it with pepperoni. Roll it up tight and slice it into pinwheels small enough for little hands. For adventurous eaters, set out sliced olives, diced bell pepper or pineapple to add before rolling.
