Pope Leo XIV will not go on his scheduled trip to Assisi next week on the advice of his doctors, the Vatican announced Friday.

Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Pope Leo XIV will not go on his scheduled trip to Assisi next week on the advice of his doctors, the Vatican announced Friday.
The pope's doctors said a chest X-ray confirmed that he is recovering well, but the doctors advised against traveling via helicopter so soon after thoracic surgery.
Leo had lung cancer surgery on Oct. 13. Doctors originally said the surgery was to remove a nodule in the lung, but after the surgery they said they had to remove part of the lung because the nodule was cancerous. The surgery showed that he had adenocarcinoma, which is the most common type of lung cancer.
They later said he needed no further treatment for the cancer.
Leo had been scheduled to attend the "Unarmed and Disarming Peace" meeting in Assisi on Oct. 27. The meeting marks the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace, begun by Pope John Paul II.
The Vatican press office said Leo will send a message expressing his closeness to the "organizers, the leaders and representatives of Christian denominations and other religions, and the guests attending."
