Where to Go Grape Stomping In the Fall

Believed to have begun with the ancient Romans, grape stomping is the practice of breaking down the fall harvest in order to extract the juice of the grapes. Modern machinery, of course, has replaced the old method, but many festivals still honor the old traditions in an activity that has become more fun than work.

Swipe through to learn where you can stomp some grapes this fall.

Finger Lakes District, New York

In Upper New York State’s Finger Lakes wine region, and the nearby Niagara Wine Trail, you’ll find opportunities to turn your feet purple as you partake in this time-tested tradition. Numerous festivals around the area include food and music and plenty of family-friendly activities.

Tuscany, Italy

Truly one of the most beautiful places on earth, Tuscany is home to numerous vineyards, many of which offer guests the opportunity to participate in grape-harvest rituals, such as stomping. While you’re visiting, don’t miss Tuscan cuisine, some of the best on the planet.

Napa Valley, California

California produces the most wine in the U.S., and much of it comes from Napa Valley, north of San Francisco. The region’s climate is perfect for growing grapes, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay being among the most-produced. Numerous vineyards invite guests to get their feet dirty with the annual stomping tradition.

Provence, France

Another famous grape-growing region, Provence is legendary for its beauty and charm. You’ll find a number of wineries that encourage you to shed your shoes, wash your feet, and jump in a barrel of purple orbs. Located in the southeastern part of the country, Provence borders the Mediterranean Sea, so while you’re there, consider dipping your toes in its deep-blue waters.

Texas Hill Country

West of Austin, the Texas Hill Country is home to numerous wineries, many of which invite guests to join in the grape-stomping revelry. Start in Fredericksburg, a charming town with German roots, and visit any of the 100 or so nearby wineries to get in a good stomp.
