Motorcycle helmets are undoubtedly a vital piece of safety gear, but they only offer protection after an accident has occurred. A California startup company called Break Free is looking to change this by creating stylish LED helmets. The company's goal is to prevent accidents in the first place by using the helmet's back-lit LED lights to act as more visible brake lights. Unlike the bike's own brake light, however, Brake Free responds to other sources of deceleration, such as engine braking and downshifting. No wires or other connection to the motorcycle is necessary for the helmet to work, and much like many bicycle lights, you can recharge its built-in battery with a USB cable. About the new helmet, vice president of sales and marketing at LS2 Helmets Phil Ammendolia states, “After nearly 42 years of working in the motorcycle industry, and 17 specializing in helmets, one thing continue to prove true, a rider can never be too visible."
