Serena Williams is one of the greatest professional athletes of all time, and so much more. She’s won 23 grand slam titles, started an independent apparel company and become a minority owner of the Miami Dolphins. Serena has been a Nike brand athlete since 2003, and in 2019 a new building at Nike’s world headquarters will be constructed and named after her. What a way to honor a future legend.
Nike named three newly constructed buildings at its headquarters after prominent sports figures and plans to open them in 2019. Aside from the one named after Serena Williams, Nike named one building after track and field star Sebastian Coe and a fitness center after long-time Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski — Coach K for short.
The building was designed by a collective of Northwest-based architectural firms (ZGF Architects, SRG Partnership and Skylab Architecture), and was constructed by Hoffman Construction. The Serena Williams building will be the largest at Nike's headquarters, occupying a massive one million square feet of space — that’s as large as three city blocks.
Serena’s influence on the sport of tennis and athletics, in general, is undeniable. Her position as a role model and inspiration to young girls across the world has been unmatched over the course of her career. According to Nike, she’s, “one of the greatest athletes of all time and one of the most inspiring people in sport.”
