June 4 (UPI) -- Officials in North Carolina's Iredell County said they have successfully captured nine of the 10 wild mustangs that escaped in May.
Iredell County Animal Services said seven of the horses were secured by May 20, and a Wednesday update stated two more equines had been caught, leaving only one remaining on the loose.
"At this time, ICAS has not received any further sightings or reports regarding the remaining tenth horse since the initial incident. Animal Services continues to actively monitor the area, patrol potential impact zones, and respond to all citizen reports," officials wrote in a news release.
The horses are believed to have escaped from a local property on May 11.
A local non-profit assisting with the capture efforts said the wild horses were likely purchased from the Bureau of Land Management in Monroe.
The bureau manages and protects wild horses in 10 western states, and the horses are sometimes sold for $25 each to owners who need to meet certain qualifications to ensure the animals will be cared for humanely.
County officials said the owner of the horses, who has not been identified, will be charged with failing to properly secure the animals and failing to cooperate with capture efforts.
