DETROIT — Democratic U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Detroit won a fifth term in Congress on Nov. 3 over Republican James D. Hooper of Livonia, whom she faced for the second time in a row.
Tlaib had 83% to Hooper's 15% with an estimated 10% of the votes counted in Michigan's 12th Congressional District when the Associated Press and NBC called the race. The district covers Dearborn, Detroit's west side, Garden City, Inkster, Livonia, Redford Township and Westland. They were trailed by the Green Party's Brenda Sanders, the Working Party's Gary Walkowicz and U.S. Taxpayer Party's Marc Joseph Sosnowski, according to the unofficial results.
The Oakland County communities of Southfield, Lathrup Village and Beverly Hills are also were drawn into the district by the redistricting commission.
Tlaib, an attorney and former state lawmaker, is a self-identified democratic socialist who has campaigned with Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed during the spring and fall. She has sharply criticized the Trump administration's war with Iran and continued her slamming of Israel over the conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
In mid-October, Tlaib criticized the predawn federal raid on the home of fellow Democrat, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, as "fascist" and politically motivated. A Justice Department spokesperson said "the enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation" regarding Omar's immigration status.
Tlaib has sponsored legislation that would ban federal agencies from using automated mass surveillance systems, including automatic license plate readers such as Flock. While the bill isn't expected to advance in the Republican-led House, it might enjoy better prospects if the Democrats take control of the House next term.
Hooper is a building trades worker who has done missionary work in Liberia and ran on an anti-abortion platform, among other issues, according to his campaign website.
After redistricting, Tlaib moved within Detroit to run in the overwhelmingly Democratic 12th District. She serves on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability and House Financial Services. She also chairs the Congressional Mamas' Caucus and the Get the Lead Out Caucus.
