Unusual Things You Can Use as Hair Conditioner

Did you know you can get soft, shiny and healthy hair without using store-bought conditioner? Instead, head to the kitchen to find common pantry items that might just make your hair more lustrous than it’s ever been.

Swipe through to learn about unusual ingredients you can use as hair conditioner.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is packed with emollients, which offer softening qualities. The oil penetrates the hair shaft and preserves moisture. It also smooths the outer cuticle of the hair strands, which makes hair look more shiny. Massage a couple of tablespoons (or more, depending on thickness and length) into your hair, let it sit for 15 minutes and then rinse it out.

Aloe Vera Gel

You might not have this one in the kitchen, but you can easily find it in a grocery store. With Vitamins A, C, and E, aloe vera gel can contribute to cell turnover, which can promote healthy cell growth and shiny hair. Many users find that it conditions and improves their dry, damaged hair. Rub aloe into scalp and hair, then use a gentle shampoo to wash it out after an hour.

Mayonnaise

Many curlyheads swear to the efficacy of mayo as a hair conditioner. The sandwich condiment can help replace oils that don’t always make it from the scalp down the loops of hair to the middle and lower parts of strands. More oil means less dryness, which means less frizz. Use ½ to 1 cup of mayo as a hair mask, rinsing it out after 20 minutes.

Fermented Rice Water

For centuries, people in various parts of Asia have used fermented rice water to grow long, shiny hair. To make this conditioner, simply cook rice as you usually would. Save the cooking liquid, put it in a squirt bottle and let it sit on the counter for a couple of days. Then use the now-fermeted water as a rinse, saturating your hair and scalp. Rinse with clean water.

Avocado

Avocados contain natural oils and fatty acids and can be particularly helpful for people with dry, dehydrated hair. Some of the minerals in avocado oil, including potassium and magnesium, may seal cuticle cells, and help hair look smooth and shiny and maybe prevent it from breaking. Mash an avocado with ¼ cup of olive oil and apply all over your hair and use a shower cap to keep it contained. Rinse it out after 20-30 minutes.

Greek Yogurt

Many folks in the Middle East use yogurt as a hair conditioner. It can make hair soft and shiny, many proponents say. It also cleanses the scalp and can help reduce dandruff. Mix it with honey, apply to scalp and hair and rinse after 30 minutes.

Mashed Banana

Bananas contain silica, which is a mineral that helps your body synthesize collagen and might make your hair stronger, thicker and less dry. The yellow fruit also has antimicrobial properties that can help heal flaky and dry scalp. In a blender, mash up banana with an egg or some olive oil. Apply this mask all over your scalp and hair; rinse out after 20 minutes.
