“We got addicted to striped polos in the early ‘90s,” says Guy Mariano. “We were influenced by a lot of hip hop of that time.” Both Mariano and Eric Koston, his partner in Numbers, recall the look was bi-coastal, whether it was their crew skating Lockwood, the SF Embarcadero crew or their friends skating New York’s Brooklyn Banks. Simply put, there was a universal aesthetic in the apparel that defined the era.

Regularly frequenting premium activewear retailers in the early ‘90s, Koston and Mariano amassed formidable collections. They both were influenced by the available brands and in turn, they influenced the aesthetic of a generation of skaters.

The obsession has remained, and is realized in the second Koston and Mariano-helmed Nike SB X Numbers capsule collaboration. Two versions of the Nike SB X Numbers Dry Men’s Polo — one with blue stripes, the other burgundy — highlight the clothing offering, which also includes two colorways of a lightweight, raglan sleeve Nike SB X Numbers Men’s Jacket (in blue and white). “This collection falls right in line with what we were wearing in the early ‘90s,” says Koston.

Both pieces connect seamlessly to the spirit of the Nike SB Blazer Low AC “Numbers.” Built off the Nike SB Blazer, the shoe gives the iconic basketball silhouette a preppy twist. “It's just clean,” says Mariano. “You don't get the ripped laces. And having those three straps gives a nice secure, lock-down fit for skating.”

The shoe comes in both burgundy and a crisp white. The “Numbers edition” note is revealed under the first strap — a reminder of the Numbers brand “publishing house” ethos.
