A long-lost Pokemon game that was only available for a brief time in Japan in 2005 may have resurfaced on a Nintendo DS test cartridge for sale on eBay.

July 31 (UPI) -- A long-lost Pokémon game that was only available for a brief time in Japan in 2005 may have resurfaced on a Nintendo DS test cartridge for sale on eBay.

The eBay listing, which is from a German seller and starts at $9,145.66, was flagged by fans online as possibly being a surviving physical copy of Pokémon Fishing Contest DS.

The game was available as a download-only title at Japanese Pokémon Center stores from May-August 2005, and the game would delete itself from a system once it was powered off.

No playable copies of the game are known to still exist.

"This listing is for the exact physical development/test cartridge shown in the photos," the listing states. "Acquired as part of a private lot, no further history or provenance documentation is available. It's in working condition and when tested on a retail Nintendo DS, it boots to a Japanese-language screen indicating a high-score ranking communication program. DSi and 3DS compatibility is not confirmed. No additional functionality has been tested or is guaranteed. Sold strictly as a physical item as-is."

Pokémon fans online said the photos of the Japanese text indicate it might be a copy of the fishing game. However, some have cautioned it could merely be server code to track high scores in the game, and not the game itself.

The listing had not attracted any bids as of early Friday afternoon. The auction ends Sunday.
