Create a Cottage Garden with these Beautiful Plants

Cottage gardens are informal gardens with explosions of color. Because they originated centuries ago in England, cottage gardens tend to feature old-fashioned plants. These charming landscapes are haphazard, casual and beautiful.

Swipe through to get ideas for plants for your cottage garden.

Roses, of course, should be a part of a cottage garden. Choose varieties that are known to do well in your area and sprinkle them throughout your landscape—no formal hedges in cottage garden style. Pick colors that pop and complement the other plants in your garden.

Add a trellis to your garden, and train sweet peas to climb up your fence. Available in white, pink, and lavender, these vintage charmers lend a retro vibe to your landscape.

Simple but classic, daisies are a wonderful addition to a cottage garden. Go for traditional white or mix it up with yellow and lavender. Daisies are wonderful in bouquets, and cutting them to add to a vase just makes the plant grow more blooms.

Add some height to your garden with lovely foxgloves. Featuring spikes of lavender, white or pink flowers, these beauties can grow to 3 or 4 feet tall. This plant, however, may not be a good choice for households with children or pets because it is toxic if ingested.

Add some herbs to your cottage garden for a beautiful green contrast to the colorful flowers. Oregano, rosemary, sage, thyme and basil all add texture and a lovely perfume to the air. Plus, how much fun is it to walk out to the garden to get some seasoning for dinner?

Romantic peonies perfume the air with their colorful blooms in pink, lavender, red, coral and more. Peonies also make an excellent cut flower. Add them to your bouquets for color and fragrance.

Hollyhocks can grow up to 8 feet tall! Their long flower spikes are heavy with cup-shaped flowers in a variety of colors, including blue, purple, white, pink, red, white and yellow. These beauties will attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators to your garden.
