CHICAGO — Chicago Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent is expected to start Sunday against the New York Jets, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Coach Ben Johnson has not publicly named a starter, but he entered the week with a decision to make between Bagent and third-string quarterback Case Keenum, who had a big night Monday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Starter Caleb Williams will miss his second consecutive game with a hamstring injury.

Bagent will be making his fifth NFL start and first since 2023. The decision to move to Bagent comes less than a week after Keenum threw for 247 yards and contributed three total touchdowns against the Eagles.

Bagent did not start the Eagles game because he missed nearly the entire week of practice because of a concussion. He cleared concussion protocol by Sunday and served as Keenum’s backup Monday.

But with Bagent now fully healthy, the Bears are expected to go with their backup against the Jets in Week 4.

“I feel really good about the whole room, so I don’t know that there’s a bad choice or a wrong choice,” Johnson said Friday when discussing his quarterback options. “We’re very, very fortunate that we’ve got guys that we believe in. The whole team believes — it’s not just the coaching staff — the whole team believes in everybody in that room. It’s one of those things that you can’t go wrong.”

Braxton Jones to IR

The Bears placed Jones, their starting left tackle, on injured reserve Saturday after he injured his right knee against the Eagles. By going on IR, Jones must miss at least four games.

Jones won the left tackle job and started the first three games after a position battle during training camp. Johnson announced this week that Theo Benedet will start at left tackle against the Jets.

The Bears are working second-year tackle Ozzy Trapilo back from a January knee injury, although Johnson said Trapilo won’t be available Sunday against the Jets.

The Bears also flexed cornerback Nick McCloud and defensive end Marcus Davenport to the active roster from the practice squad for the Jets game.
