On the fourth floor of a nondescript shopping center in Chengdu, China is the Zhongshuge Bookstore — an embodiment of childish whimsy and that manages to integrate the charming personality that many Chengdu people take pride in.
Finished in 2017 by design director Xiang Li in conjunction with X+Living, this spectacular bookstore transports you to worlds that normally only exist in books. Complete with a bamboo forest, magic mushrooms and giant pandas (though sadly not real), step inside this unique book paradise.
Upon first inspection, you may assume this is just a normal bookstore with some cool hourglass bookshelves. It’s not until you fully enter this wonderland that you realize it’s full potential — filled with fun mischievous touches and some rooms that are sure to channel your inner Harry Potter or Hermione Granger.
You’ll first come to the ‘bamboo forest,’ a spacious area filled with more hourglass bookcases so you can peruse books in a magical fashion.
The most enchanting part of the whole bookstore is the jungle-like paradise in the kid’s section. These brightly lit mushrooms evoke Alice in Wonderland nostalgia and the use of mirrors really opens up space, while simultaneously feeling trippy.
This dark paneled room is the perfect place to sit and get lost in a good book.
You can enjoy a tea overlooking the city of Chengdu next to these statement exposed brick pillars.
At the end of the bookstore is the lecture hall, a magnificent tiered room with a wall of windows to allow tons of natural light. The use of mirrors expands the space and further channels the psychedelic feeling that runs through the rest of the store.
