TAMPA, Fla. — The Lightning needed overtime to pull out their fifth win in six games Thursday night, 4-3 over the Seattle Kraken at Benchmark International Arena.

Victor Hedman scored his first goal of the season with 2:53 left in the five-minute 3-on-3 extra period. He poked the puck past Shane Wright, then split the other two Seattle skaters before sweeping a backhand shot past goaltender Philipp Grubauer.

Brandon Hagel scored the Lightning’s first two goals, two games after he recorded a hat trick in Saturday’s win at the Islanders. His six goals this season lead the Lightning.

Entering Thursday’s game, Hagel led the NHL in shots on goal per 60 minutes (14.09), so on a Lightning team that often gets criticized for passing too much he is showing otherwise.

The Lightning couldn’t hold a pair of one-goal leads in the third period, allowing a game-tying goal on a tip-in by Matty Beniers with 4:19 left in regulation.

Dominic James, in his season debut following a hand injury, made an immediate impact.

The Lightning’s 11-forward, seven-defenseman lineup allowed James to bring his speed to a number of line combinations, and on Hagel’s second goal James’ pass off the wall sprung Anthony Cirelli to create a rush with Hagel. Cirelli brought the puck through the neutral zone and found Hagel above the left circle, where he wristed a shot past Grubauer.

The Lightning fell behind early when defenseman Emil Lilleberg made a costly turnover behind the Tampa Bay net and the puck leaked in front for Kraken forward Ryan Winterton just 5:43 into the game.

Hagel tied the game with 3:07 left in the period, set up by a tremendous seam pass from Brayden Point, who cut in front of traffic just past the blue line and threaded a pass to Hagel charging in from the right wing.

The Lightning took a 2-1 lead into the third period but couldn’t hold it after allowing a power-play goal by Jared McCann 2:54 into the period.

Ilya Mikheyev restored Tampa Bay’s lead just over seven minutes later with the 100th goal of his NHL career. He took the puck away from Seattle defenseman Ville Ottavainen in front of the net and pushed it past Grubauer.

After the Lightning had just three shots on goal on their first two power plays, running their league-worst rate to 7.69% (2-for-26), they sent out a different look for their third power play late in the second period.

Cirelli moved to the first unit, positioned in the bumper spot. Point moved to the left circle, and Hagel went to the second unit. Point’s move took his right-hand shot out of the middle but gave Nikita Kucherov the cross-slot right-hand one-timer option he hasn’t had this season.
