9 Quick Trips to Take from Latin American Cities

For the spontaneous traveler, Latin America brims with hidden gems perfect for a quick escape when city life is a bit too loud. You'll find serene beaches and misty mountains, and each getaway promises a refreshing change of pace and scenery.

If you're ready to discover a pocket of paradise swipe ahead and start planning your next mini adventure!

Mexico City → Valle de Bravo

Just two hours from the bustle of Mexico City lies Valle de Bravo, a charming lakeside town wrapped in pine forests. Spend your morning paragliding over Lake Avándaro or sailing gently across its calm waters. As for scenery, make sure to visit the cascading Velo de Novia waterfall tucked away in a nature reserve nearby.

Bogotá → Villa de Leyva

Escape Bogotá’s busy streets for Villa de Leyva, a colonial jewel just a three-hour drive away. Massive stone plazas and centuries-old buildings whisper stories of the past as time seems to stand still. Wander through artisan shops, grab a coffee at a leafy courtyard café or explore fossil museums showcasing ancient wonders. The surrounding desert hills invite you for a scenic hike or horseback ride.

Lima → Paracas

A short trip south of Lima takes you to Paracas, where desert sands meet the Pacific Ocean. Hop on a boat tour to the Ballestas Islands, often called the poor man’s Galápagos, where sea lions and playful penguins await. Back on shore, rent a dune buggy and race through sand dunes or unwind at a beachside ceviche shack. The Paracas National Reserve enchants with otherworldly coastal cliffs and flamingo-dotted lagoons.

Buenos Aires → Tigre Delta

Trade Buenos Aires’ tango nights for the calm backwaters of the Tigre Delta, only an hour drive away. Board a riverboat and weave through tranquil canals lined with rustic cottages and lush greenery. Drop by the Puerto de Frutos market for quirky antiques and local art. If you crave adventure, rent a kayak and paddle your way to hidden islets to place eyes on the variety of wild birds.

Santiago → Cajón del Maipo

When Santiago’s skyscrapers fade into the rearview mirror, the dramatic Andes rise up ahead in Cajón del Maipo. This canyon oasis is beloved for its turquoise rivers, thermal springs and snow-capped peaks. Spend the day trekking to the El Morado Glacier or soaking in the steamy Baños Colina hot springs. Local rustic restaurants serve hearty empanadas and Chilean wine with mountain views.

Rio de Janeiro → Ilha Grande

When Rio’s beaches get crowded, hop on a ferry to Ilha Grande — a car-free island paradise just a few hours away. Dense Atlantic rainforest blankets rugged hills, hiding waterfalls and secret coves. Snorkel alongside sea turtles in the crystal-clear waters of Lagoa Azul or hike the trail to Lopes Mendes, one of Brazil’s most stunning beaches. Simple pousadas and beach bars make staying overnight easy and enchanting.

Panama City → San Blas Islands

A quick flight or boat ride from Panama City transports you to the pristine San Blas Islands, home to the indigenous Guna people. There are over 350 tiny islands scattered like emeralds across the Caribbean Sea. Swim, snorkel and nap in a hammock under swaying coconut palms—it’s that blissful. Freshly caught seafood and vibrant Guna handicrafts add cultural flavor to your castaway escape.

Quito → Mindo Cloud Forest

Two hours from Quito’s urban buzz lies the magical Mindo Cloud Forest, a haven for nature lovers to wake to birds singing and the soft patter of rain on giant leaves. Zipline over treetops, chase waterfalls hidden deep in emerald canyons or visit a butterfly sanctuary shimmering with color. Go on one of Mindo’s chocolate tours for a bit of extra delight with some local flavor.

Montevideo → Punta del Este

Trade Montevideo’s calm beaches for Punta del Este’s glitzy shores, just two hours away by car. Known as South America’s glamorous playground, it combines sparkling beaches, chic boutiques and stylish nightlife. Stroll along Playa Brava to snap a selfie with the iconic giant hand sculpture rising from the sand. In the evening, dine on fresh seafood while watching the sunset paint the sky in fiery shades.
