The circus is a time-honored tradition, but these days, the guilt of supporting an industry that tends to perpetuate animal cruelty means that fewer people are attending. A circus in Germany has decided the show must go on — so they’ve begun using hologram animals in place of real ones.
The Circus Roncalli began phasing out live animals in the early 1990s and eliminated them fully in 2017, adding the holograms much later. The experience is no less magical and still allows audiences to enjoy the tradition without the associated guilt.

The holograms aren’t just of animals, but also clowns, acrobats and magicians.
Founded in 1976, Circus Roncalli recognizes that to stay relevant, they need to keep up with the times — both ethically and technologically.
While the holograms seem realistically three dimensional, the projectors (all 11 of them) are actually hitting a flat surface in the center of the ring, creating the illusion of 3D subjects.
Don’t expect to just see traditional circus animals either. This circus also includes some funkier additions like this giant goldfish.
Circus Roncalli hopes the use of holograms will help overcome the decline in attendees over the years and has every intention of upping the ante as they become more technologically advanced.
