Iconic Sneakers | Adidas Gazelle

Released in 1966, the Gazelle evolved through fashion cycles and subcultures for years. Today, it's a global lifestyle essential with a sleek, multi-generational profile that crosses continents.

Continue on for the journey of the Adidas Gazelle through fashion history.

Back to the Roots

Adidas was born from the need to create athletic leisurewear and the desire to engineer the perfect shoe. They were actually pretty obsessed with it. You could say this is where sporty style was born.

1966: Birth of the Gazelle

When it first came out, there were two versions of the Gazelle — red suede for indoor sports (with a herringbone sole) and blue suede for training (with a rubber outsole).

The Hexagon Outsole

Through the late ’60s and ’70s, Adidas experimented with tongues, heel counters, zip fasteners and traction systems. In 1971, the shoe introduced its most famous performance feature: the hexagonal outsole, which instantly improved grip.

Gazelle Goes Global

During the 70s and 80s the Gazelle made its way around the world, capturing everyone's attention. The French renamed the blue version “Chamois” and the red “Rubis,” while Japan called it the Adidas 300.

The Comeback Kicks

After a short break, the Gazelle bounced back stronger than ever. Adidas quickly learned that the 80s were about vibrant colors and fashion risks. The Gazelle Super was produced and introduced a new type of heel tab. This was a hint of how fashion-forward this "sports shoe" would become.

Cultural Takeover

By the ’90s and 2000s, the Gazelle had crossed into full-fledged icon status. Worn by the likes of Kate Moss, the Beastie Boys, Oasis and Run DMC, the sneaker became larger than life. It began to symbolize the ever-present intersection of personal style and culture.

A Timeless Staple

The Gazelle is a global favorite worn by literally everyone from celebs and influencers to soccer moms, gym bros, and athletes alike. Whether it's bold brights, pastel suedes, or casual neutrals, the Gazelle continues writing its story with every step.
