A 17-year-old boy was Monday in connection to the fatal shooting of a pregnant woman at a Halloween costume store late last week in California.

Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Police in northern California arrested a 17-year-old boy Monday afternoon on accusations that he fatally shot a pregnant woman and wounded six others in a shooting that erupted Friday at a Halloween costume store.
As he is a minor, the suspect's identity was being withheld from the public, but authorities said he was arrested at his residence in neighboring Suisun City and has been charged with murder and attempted murder, though additional offense may follow.
He is accused of killing Constance Hages, a 31-year-old pregnant woman, when he opened fire in a Spirit Halloween store within Solano Town Center shopping mall at about 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Authorities believe the shooting was targeted and followed a previous altercation, though it remained unclear which of the victims was the intended target.
On Sunday, the Fairfield Police Department identified the four injured victims who remained hospitalized as a 19-year-old man who remained in critical condition and a 16-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man and a 32-year-old man who were all in stable condition.
The two other victims who received treatment for gunshot wounds and were released from the hospital were both men, a 19-year-old and a 43-year-old.
Michelle Belyea, public information officer for the Fairfield Police Department, said during the press conference that the suspect entered the store, spotted a customer believed to have been the intended target, produced a firearm and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Authorities identified the suspect within hours of the shooting, though Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said he was uncertain who the target was.
The police department said a Fairfield Police school resource officer, reviewing surveillance footage from the store, recognized the suspect as a former student, which led to his arrest.
Marshall addressed criticism during the press conference over a supposed lack of information made public about the suspect, stating that because investigators knew who they were looking for, they didn't want to alert the suspect that they were onto him.
"We were on him pretty quickly as far as following where he is, tracking him down, so we were able to finally make an arrest today. I know there's different thought process there, but we didn't want to compromise the case and we didn't want him out any longer than he could be before we could track him down," Marshall said.
The suspect was previously arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred in the parking lot of a local school in 2025 -- a crime for which Marshall said the suspect only served a few months in juvenile hall.
In announcing the charges, Marshall criticized the judicial system for permitting this minor to commit a second shooting.
"This event shouldn't have even occurred," he said, calling for legislative changes to impose tougher penalties for minors.
The Spirit Halloween store shooting comes months after a 17-year-old was accused of killing one person and wounding three others in a shooting during a graduation ceremony at Fairfield High School in early June.
"California has gotten extremely soft on accountability with youth, and I think after seeing the homicide at the graduation at Fairfield High School earlier in the year and now this, another juvenile male, it's showing that legislative changes are showing a lack of accountability for our youth.
"We have to see something change," he continued.
"I don't know how many more people have to die at the hands of youth."
Marshall said the suspect was arrested peacefully.
He added that Solano County District Attorney Krishna Abrams was looking into the possibility of charging him with double murder as Hages was pregnant.
