Air Jordan 3 "True Blue" Makes a Returns

Photography: Nike

The True Blue colorway was the quiet one of the four original Air Jordan 3 models released in 1988. There's no Bulls red, so no TV game minutes. Somehow it's the pair people keep circling back to and they're back after about a decade away. Swipe ahead.

1988 originals

When the Air Jordan 3 arrived in 1988, the True Blue was one of four original colorways and the clear odd one out. Its white, blue and gray mix had nothing to do with Chicago Bulls team colors, a deliberate move to show the Jordan line could stand on its own.

Tinker Hatfield

The Air Jordan 3 was legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield's first design for the line, and it landed at a pivotal moment. Hatfield is widely credited with keeping MJ at Nike when he was weighing a jump to Adidas.

Elephant Print, Visible Air

The AJ3 brought two firsts to the line — visible Nike Air cushioning in the heel and the elephant-print overlay. As the story goes, Hatfield got the elephant-print idea from patterned couches he spotted at Jordan's house, though that one lives as design lore more than hard fact.

All-Star Game

During the 1988-89 NBA season, MJ laced up every colorway of the Air Jordan 3 except the True Blues. When he was slated to wear them during the 1989 All-Star game, he instead chose the Black Cement colorway. He finally wore them years later during his Washington Wizards run, at the 2002 All-Star game.

2001 to 2016 retros

After its original release, the True Blues came back in 2001, then trickled out through international, wider and 2016 releases. That 2016 drop restored the original Nike Air heel branding for the first time since 1988, and those pairs still resell for fairly reasonably prices, usually under $300.

White, gray and true blue

The 2026 pair leans on a white tumbled leather upper, Cement Grey elephant print and Fire Red accents, with a lighter, brighter blue than the deep 2016 shade. That clean palette reads easy with jeans and doesn't fight louder pieces, so it works across plenty of everyday looks. The official launch date for the Ar Jordan 3 True Blue is July 18, 2026.
