July 23 (UPI) -- Carolina Panthers linebacker Nic Scourton sustained a right knee injury and was carted off the field Thursday at training camp in Charlotte, N.C.

Panthers coach Dave Canales told reporters that Scourton will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.

"I was looking at the other side of the field," Canales said. "I just heard him go down. They're going to take him and go get imaging this afternoon and we'll have more information on it."

Canales and Panthers players walked over to hug Scourton while he was on his way to the training room.

Scourton, a second-round pick by the Panthers in the 2025 NFL Draft, totaled 47 combined tackles, seven tackles for a loss, five sacks, a pass defensed and a forced fumble over 17 appearances last season.

Jaelan Phillips, Patrick Jones II and Princely Umanmielen are among the Panthers' other outside linebackers.

"We've got guys," Canales said. "That's why we keep bringing in guys depth and talent and different guys in that room. ... We've got a whole group of guys we are counting on. If it comes to that, [a serious Scourton injury] we have guys that we trust."

Panthers rookies reported to training camp Tuesday in Charlotte. Veterans reported Wednesday to Bank of America Stadium. The Panthers will face the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame Game -- the first preseason matchup of the year -- at 8 p.m. EDT Aug. 6 in Canton, Ohio.
