German photographer Andy Schwetz visited an abandoned mental institution in Italy and felt compelled to photograph the cruel and harsh conditions that people once had to deal with.

Many of the buildings photographed were once beautiful, but have now fallen into disrepair, probably for the better. Regardless, the images are haunting.
