Nike’s First Self-Lacing Shoe

Nike’s First Self-Lacing Shoe

After countless prototypes and redesigns, Nike released its automatic self-lacing sneaker in 2016. Nike calls the technology “adaptive fit,” and named the sneaker the Hyperadapt 1.0. A sensor, motor, battery and cable system work alongside an algorithmic pressure equation to adjust the fit of the shoe.

Swipe ahead for a closer look at this cutting-edge performance sneaker.

Nike’s HyperAdapt has its own nickname: E.A.R.L. It stands for Electro Adaptive Reactive Lacing.

When the lacing system is active, the midsole of the shoe glows blue for a few seconds.

The shoe comes in a mostly black, white, or gray exterior. The Hyperadapt appears to feature a set of laces that run up the front of the shoe, but it turns out they’re not actually laces.

Instead, nylon bands contract and expand as the shoe loosens or tightens.

The shoe’s heel cap also includes an LED light that illuminates when the lacing engine is engaged. The light radiates to reflect whether the shoe is being tightened or loosened.
