In April 2019, the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France sustained permanent damage to the iconic spire after a fire raged through the church. While it’s sad to have lost that part of French history, architects and designers are putting forth their proposals for the restoration of the spire. Some are ingenious, some are otherworldly and some are just plain odd.
Although the historic spire is no longer, what better to replace it than an educational experience? Studio NAB proposed an educational greenhouse on the roof of the cathedral with stunning panoramic views.

Going for something a little simpler, Studio Fuksas’ suggested a shining crystal spire as a symbol of the fragility of history.

Like something out of a “Star Trek” movie, Vizumatelier proposed an impressively thin and tall spire to connect heaven and earth. Fitting for the cathedral, a place of French spirituality since the 12th century.

Who needs simple when you can have something as ornate as Kiss the Architect’s suggested proposal made up of arches and balls all surrounding a large spiral staircase leading upwards.

Perhaps the simplest of all is the proposal from Anthony Séjourné who has suggested replacing the spire with bright spotlights. Simple yes, but we imagine this will lead to a relatively high electricity bill.

This eclectic piece of art doesn’t necessarily fit with the general aesthetic of the cathedral, but you have to hand it to Mathieu Lehanneur — he’s produced something truly unique with his permanent flame covered in gold leaves design.
