Places You Probably Never Clean But Definitely Should

Even the tidiest of people may overlook areas of their homes that really need a good cleaning now and then. It's easy to haul out the vacuum and give the floors a quick swipe or two, but are you forgetting something?

Swipe through to find out about the forgotten areas you need to clean.

Those squishy rubber strips that run around the outer edges of your refrigerator doors collect all kinds of gunk. Spills, crumbs—these refrigerator door seals or gaskets can get pretty grimy. Use a soft wet rag to clean them up.

How many times a day do you pick up your smartphone? Are your hands always pristine when you do? Unlikely. Get rid of germs and residue from your lunch by using a lint-free cloth very lightly dampened with soap and water. Wipe all sides of your phone thoroughly, and then use a clean, dry cloth to remove all moisture.

You might just look right past it every morning, but carefully examine your shower curtain or shower curtain liner. Odds are you’ll see hard water stains and maybe even mold or mildew. Get out the cleanser and scrub brush, and have at it!

Doorknobs are another frequently touched surface that we often forget to clean regularly. Use a rag dampened with soap and water or a commercial cleaning spray to wipe them down from time to time.

How often do you vacuum or sweep underneath your furniture? Take the extra time 3-4 times per year to move things around and clean underneath them. Or at least jam the broom or vacuum extension under there to get out the crumbs and dead bugs. While you’re at it, lift up the couch cushions, too, and vacuum there.

You might be surprised at how much dust your window treatments gather. Shades, blinds, curtains all gather dus, cobwebs and other detritus as well. Dust your blinds often. Once a year, take fabric window coverings down and launder them if possible. Or if they’re too big and bulky, use one of the many attachments for your vacuum to give them a good cleaning.

Have a look at the tops of your ceiling fan blades, and odds are you’ll see a thick layer of dust. Yuck. Every time you turn on the fan, you’re sending dust bits flying around the room. To clean them, first cover the furniture or floor below the fans with old sheets, and then use a soft rag to carefully wipe the dust off.

Like doorknobs, light switches are touched by dirty, germy hands many times a day. Starting with a dry cloth, give them a good wipe down. Switch to a cloth that’s been very lightly dampened with soapy water. And then use a clean dry cloth to thoroughly dry them.
