Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Cristiano Ronaldo's run with Portugal didn't end at the 2026 World Cup, as the aging soccer star was named Friday to coach Jorge Jesus' Nations League roster.

Unlike longtime rival Lionel Messi, Ronaldo has yet to announce when he intends to retire from international play. The 41-year-old said earlier this summer that the 2026 World Cup would be his last.

Ronaldo, defender Nuno Mendes and midfielders Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Joao Neves and Vitinha are among 21 players from Portugal's 2026 World Cup squad named to the Nations League roster.

Jesus selected Joao Palhinha and Ruben Neves to join Silva, Fernandes, Neves and Vitinha in the midfield.

Ronaldo, Joao Felix, Pedro Neto, Fabio Silva, Francisco Conceicao, Francisco Trincao, Rafael Leao and Goncalo Ramos were the forwards named to Jesus' 25-man roster.

Mendes, Tomas Araujo, Goncalo Inacio, Joao Cancelo, Diogo Dalot, Renato Veiga, Ruben Dias and Nuno Tavares were the defenders picked for the squad.

They are joined by goalies Diogo Costa, Rui Silva and Samuel Soares.

Ronaldo previously played under Jesus when he was coach at Al-Nassr. The legendary forward totaled three goals in seven appearances this season for the Saudi club.

Jesus, 71, was hired in July to replace Roberto Martinez, who resigned after leading Portugal to the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. Martinez, 53, assumed the role in 2023.

Portugal, the No. 7 team in the FIFA world rankings, will host No. 38 Wales in the Nations League group stage Thursday in Lisbon. No. 19 Norway will host Portugal on Sept. 27 in Oslo. No. 21 Denmark will host Portugal on Oct. 1 in Copenhagen.

Messi, 39, will play his final game for No. 2 Argentina -- a friendly versus Benin -- on Oct. 6 in Buenos Aires.
