Early in 2025, the U.S. government announced striking changes to the tariffs enforced on imported goods. The added costs for companies to import products and materials is certainly expected to trickle down to the consumers buying them.

Large Appliances

While chances of you needing a new washer, dryer or dishwasher more than once every 10 years are pretty slim, this may be the best time to replace any of them. Similar to most consumer electronics, these types of appliances are manufactured in Asian countries, which will be subject to higher than normal tariffs.

Small Appliances

To make sure you’re able to properly clean your home, cook dinners or cool individual rooms in your home, look to grab smaller appliances like vacuum cleaners, air fryers and tower fans.

Wireless Headphones

All the different types of electronics manufactured in Asia countries are subject to steep price increases. Some of the more expensive items like AirPods and Beats By Dre headphones will receive high markups, so if any of these are within your own budget, its best to buy them soon.

Smartphones, Tablets, Smartwatches

Smartphones, smartwatches and tablet will be subject to the same price hikes. If you were in the market for any of these items that normally cost more than $500, consider making a move now.

Video Games

Soon after Nintendo announced that the Switch 2 would release in June 2025, they paused pre orders coming form the U.S. and Canada. The proposed $450 price tag in the U.S. may not be the one we see when the console actually launches. It stands to reason that Sony’s PlayStation console will see a price hike in the future as well.

Paper Goods

Raw materials like lumber and wood pulp that U.S. companies import to make paper products are subject to price increases because they’re shipped in from Canada and Brazil. We all learned during the COVID-19 pandemic that panic buying does more harm than good — just be aware if the situation and plan accordingly.

Sneakers

Among many others, sports apparel giant Nike produces most of its products in China, Vietnam and Indonesia, all of which will see tariffs between 30% and 120%. If you’ve been eyeing a new pair of running shoes, now’s the time to act. If you’re a sneaker collector, they’ll be harder to buy in the near future.

Leather

For the same reasons, many leather products manufactured in China and Vietnam will be subject to huge tariffs. Leather handbags, sandals, and jackets are all good items to grab sooner than later.

Spices and Oils

Many of the spices imported from Indonesia, Mexico and India will see steep price increases as tariffs kick in. The same goes for olive oil, which is primarily produced in Spain, Italy and Greece, and vanilla extract imported from Madagascar.

Cocoa and Coffee

About 60% of the world’s cocoa comes from Ivory Coast and Ghana, both of which will be subject to tariffs over the standard 10%. Ghana remains hopeful about working out a situation where this doesn’t happen.

Furniture

Similar to the clothing industry, most furniture is designed in one country, but manufactured in places like China, Poland and Germany. Walmart’s Mainstays brand furniture is made in China, while Ikea manufactures in China, Italy and Sweden among others.
