Located in Washington, D.C.’s trendy neighborhood of Shaw is The Firehouse on R. This now-Airbnb was built in 1884 and housed the first fully African American fire company in the city. The historic building now can accommodate up to 10 guests in three bedrooms and three bathrooms.
Originally featured on the Netflix show “Stay Here,” hosts Genevieve Gorder and Peter Lorimer helped owner Michael Abbenante turn his dowdy firehouse into a sparkling and breathtaking penthouse.
The soaring ceilings and 15-foot original archtop windows give the space tons of natural light, making it feel open and airy.
To make sure guests understand the historic nature of the building, there are photos of the old fire department throughout the space.
Capitalizing on the building’s history, the designers chose to incorporate the firemen’s pole in the center of the hallway rather than eliminate it.
Salvaged pipes were used to create a built-in bunk in one of the three bedrooms.
The master bedroom features exposed beams and brass finishings to carry through the somewhat industrial feel of the space.
