SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said in a post on social media Monday that he will give every child in the United States a share of the company next year.

Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Elon Musk said Monday that he will give every child in the United States a share of SpaceX starting next year.

SpaceX, a relatively new publicly-traded stock beginning in June, was trading for about $146 per share on Friday. Musk was scant on details when he posted about giving shares to children on Monday.

There are about 73 million children in the United States, data from the U.S. Census Bureau says.

"Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America," Musk wrote on X. "This will be the first of many."

Musk owns a 48.4% beneficial stake in SpaceX, controlling about 4.8 billion shares. Musk's shares rise to 6.4 billion when considering unvested awards and stock options.

The SpaceX CEO has been active in the run-up to the Nov. 3 midterms, donating about $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC for Republican Senate candidates. Musk made the give through a political action committee affiliated with the super PAC in support of Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton, the state's attorney general.

Musk's announcement that he plans to give SpaceX shares to children follows an announcement by Anthropic on Sunday that it will commit at least 5% of its shares to a "Public Benefit Fund." Musk responded to this announcement by saying he recommends "giving the shares directly to the public."

"That is what I will be doing," Musk wrote on social media.
