HOUSTON — Daulton Varsho sent a ground ball past a diving Brock Rodden at shortstop to drive in the tying run off Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, and two pitches later Christian Walker launched a walk-off, three-run home run to left field to give the Astros a stunning 10-7 victory Friday night.
Approaching last-gasp depths in their struggle to tread water in the American League West, the Mariners threw away a golden chance to climb back into relevancy in the opener of a crucial three-game series at Daikin Park.
The Mariners are 57-66. They have lost eight of their last 10 games, 16 of 22 and 21 of 31.
They are a season-worst six games back in the division.
