Russia launched deadly strikes targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure overnight, causing power outages in Kyiv and the surrounding region.

Sept. 30 (UPI) -- At least three people were killed and five injured in Kyiv overnight in Russian strikes targeting the capital's energy infrastructure, causing power outages in Kyiv and the surrounding region, Ukrainian authorities said Wednesday.

Two women were killed in Kyiv's western Sviatoshynskyi district where at least 12 houses were damaged and a strike on a warehouse in the central Solomiansky district killed a third person in what Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said was the biggest energy attack in months.

"Since the summer, there has been practically no day when the enemy has not attacked energy infrastructure. But such a massive and combined attack has occurred for the first time since the end of the last heating season," said Koretskyi.

Electricity provider DTEK said emergency crews were working to repair damage to its infrastructure facilities but that power had been restored to 8,000 customers in the east of the city.

Ukenergo, the state-owned operator of Ukraine's national grid, reported outages in Kyiv and the surrounding province as well as other regions, and urged people to refrain from using appliances that demand a lot of electrical current.

Russia's state-run TASS news agency said the attack struck the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant in Vyshhorod and the Trypilska thermal power plant, south of Kyiv, which it said supplied electricity to Ukrainian defense industry facilities in the northern and southern areas of the region, respectively.

An electricity storage facility north of Kyiv in Horenychi providing uninterruptible battery power to regional military facilities was also hit, according to TASS.

Volyn, Rivne and Cherkasy provinces and the port of Izmail in Odessa region were also targeted as part of a wider airborne assault the Ukrainian Air Force said in an online update was ongoing and involved hypersonic, ballistic and cruise missiles and a least 188 drones, many of them jet powered.

The air force said it had intercepted enemy aerial "vehicles" across 18 locations.
