TAMPA, Fla. — Both the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago White Sox made two errors and collected at least nine hits in Sunday’s getaway game. But while Chicago runners crossed home plate in a neverending carousel, Tampa Bay stalled out for a 9-1 loss.

The Rays’ mistakes accrued from the first at-bat. Ryan Vilade, who started at second base, gave up a leadoff single when he failed to scoop up a ground ball. Two outs later, first baseman Jonathan Aranda couldn’t get his glove on Colson Montgomery’s line drive. It went for a double, and Aranda slammed his fist on the base in frustration.

The White Sox scored their first run moments later, when Rays starting pitcher Griffin Jax fumbled a short ground ball from designated hitter Andrew Benintendi. Montgomery upped the lead to 2-0 by racing home when the Rays attempted — and failed — to catch Benintendi out at second on a wild pitch.

Both Vilade and Jax took errors on those respective plays. Though Jax delivered three consecutive strikeouts in the third inning to limit the damage, Benintendi hit a home run in the fourth to extend Chicago’s lead.

Staring down the barrel of a 3-0 deficit, the Rays loaded the bases with singles from Aranda, Vilade and Chandler Simpson. The frame ended without a score when Jonny DeLuca flied out and Ben Williamson groundout.

The White Sox kept rolling, advancing to 5-0 in the sixth inning with two walks and deep left field double. The Rays again reloaded the bases, and again failed to get a runner across home plate.

In the eighth inning, Simpson doubled on a throwing error by Chicago’s third baseman, but the inning ended with another groundout. The White Sox ran up the score in the ninth with a two-run homer from Everson Pereira and another two-run jack from Miguel Vargas.

Williamson hit a home run and Nick Fortes doubled in the final frame, but the damage had been done.

Though both teams finished with two errors, the White Sox capitalized on a high-flying offense. The Rays, meanwhile, tallied 11 hits with just one run. Williamson and DeLuca combined to leave six players on base in scoring position with two outs on the board.

The Rays (65-46) finish 6-3 in their nine-game homestand, still leading the AL East. They also have a new arm on the way: While Sunday’s game unfolded, Tampa Bay acquired right-hander Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets in exchange for three prospects.
