Oct. 2 (UPI) -- British prosecutors on Friday charged two Iranian nationals with terrorism for allegedly planning an attack on the Jewish community in the Manchester area.
Salam Ahmadyan, 36 of Liverpool, and Rahman Salehi, 34 of Salford, were arrested in Manchester on Sept. 20, on the eve of Yom Kippur, and taken to a police station in London.
Law enforcement searched locations connected to the men in Liverpool's Epworth Street and Salford's Lancaster Road.
Police accuse the two men of being in contact with a third-party overseas, likely in Iran, as they plotted an attack for the High Holy day period, which includes Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
"I'm aware that the news of this alleged plot coming during the High Holy day period has caused a great deal of concern to the Jewish community, as well as with the wider public," said Vicki Evans, deputy assistant commissioner and senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, in a statement.
"It also coincides with the anniversary of the devastating terrorist attack last year at Heaton Park synagogue and comes in a wider context of increasing antisemitic incidents across the UK, so we are very aware that this will likely increase what were already heightened concerns amongst the Jewish community."
Evans added "we do not believe there to be any ongoing threat to the public in relation to this matter, but as always, we would ask that people remain vigilant and contact police with any concerns."
Ahmadyan and Salehi are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday, Oct. 3.
