Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Two helicopters collided midair near Mount Everest on Tuesday morning, killing one person and injuring two others, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said.
Video of the incident posted online shows two helicopters, low to the ground, flying sideways into each other as a group of people look on. Both aircraft then crash into the snow-mantled ground.
The aviation authority said in a statement the collision occurred at 8:12 a.m. local time as both helicopters were attempting to land at Pheriche, near Mount Everest Base Camp.
It identified both aircraft as AS350 helicopters. One, operated by Air Dynasty Heli Service Pvt. Ltd., had departed from Lukla Airport. The other, operated by Fishtail Air Pvt. Ltd., had departed from Gorakshep with two foreign nationals on board, seemingly in addition to the pilot. The authority did not state how many people, if any, were aboard the Air Dynasty aircraft.
All three of the victims were aboard the Fishtail Air helicopter.
The aviation authority identified the dead victim as Vasanth Kumar Balaramudu, an Indian national, whose body has since been transported to Lukla Airport.
Among the injured were Sailesh Kishan Patel, a New Zealand national, and pilot-in-command Rabindra Pradhan. Their conditions were unclear, but the authority said both "have been rescued and are receiving treatment at Mediciti Hospital."
The cause of the collision was under investigation.
Mukesh Dangol, director general of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, told The Kathmandu Post that preliminary information suggests miscommunication between the pilots may have contributed to the collision.
The area is outside Lukla Airport's air traffic control tower coverage, necessitating that pilots communicate with one another, he said.
"We are recording the statement of the injured pilot," he said.
