During the 2016 NFL preseason, Colin Kaepernick protested against racial injustice and police brutality in the United States by not standing during the National Anthem before games. After a period of media scrutiny, which was egged on in part by former President Donald Trump, his message had been spun into a statement that disrespects the military. Kaepernick was subsequently released and kept from signing with another NFL team. After a seemingly bogus tryout in 2019 and settling out of court with the NFL, Kaepernick dove headfirst into partnerships with brands and various foundations dedicated to activism around police brutality and racial injustices.
