Oct. 7 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Guardians said they were "deeply saddened by" the death of Sam McDowell.
MLB announced McDowell's death on Tuesday. McDowell, 84, died Monday at his home in The Villages, Fla. MLB did not disclose a cause of death.
The former All-Star pitcher was born in Pittsburgh. He made his MLB debut in 1961 for the Cleveland Indians. McDowell, who spent 11 seasons in Cleveland, later played for the San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates.
He led MLB in strikeouts from 1968 through 1970. He led the American League in strikeouts on five occasions. McDowell posted an American League-best 2.18 ERA in 1965.
McDowell went 141-134, with a 3.17 ERA and 2,453 strikeouts, over 425 career appearances.
He wrote about an attempted suicide and addiction to alcohol in his 2022 autobiography: The Saga of Sudden Sam: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of Sam McDowell. McDowell later worked as a counselor to help other athletes suffering from addiction. He held that role for the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays, but also helped players in other leagues and sports.
"The Cleveland Guardians family is deeply saddened by the loss of one of the great pitchers in baseball history, Sam McDowell," Guardians senior vice president of public affairs Bob DiBiasio said in a statement. "Sam spent 11 of his fifteen seasons in a Cleveland uniform as one of the game's most feared hurlers. A strikeout king. He was a cherished member of our alumni ambassador program and loved sharing stories with our fans when he visited Progressive Field.
...
"Most importantly, Sam's life was a story of redemption. After extensive education and training, Sam was a counselor for athletes suffering from addiction and depression. We send our condolences to the entire McDowell family, as well as his many teammates and other organizations impacted by his career."
Because of his story of addiction and redemption, intertwined with an MLB career, many believed McDowell was the inspiration for the character Sam Malone from Cheers. But the show's co-creator, Les Charles, has said he did not inspire the character, who was played by actor Ted Danson on the hit sitcom.
