Learn How to Relieve Stress at Work

Inevitably, almost everyone experiences stress at work. Whether it’s ongoing, or hits you in short bursts, stress is not good for your physical or mental health. Luckily it’s something that can be addressed, leading to a happier life.

Swipe through for terrific tips for reducing stress at work.

Get in the habit of enjoying an orange each day at work. Not only does peeling and eating the orange give you a break from your tasks, but you’ll also get a boost of Vitamin C, which experts say can help reduce stress levels.

Schedule hourly stress-relief breaks, and vary the techniques you use. For example, during one break, step outside for a quick walk around the block. For another break, simply do a quick stretch at your desk, do a calming breathing exercise, or enjoy a cup of tea, focusing on the flavor and the warmth.

Maintain a well-defined project list and stick to it as much as possible. Even as new issues pop up, resist the temptation to upend your list in favor of immediately addressing the new problems. Get in the habit of carefully evaluating new tasks in the context of your existing list, and add them to your list as appropriate.

Invest in a quality set of headphones and listen to music while you work. Be sure to select music that is more subdued and less exciting, so you won’t lose focus on your tasks. Pick a long playlist or a station that will provide ongoing tunes without your having to spend too much time choosing music.

Keep some good-quality, non-greasy hand lotion in your desk and use it to give yourself a stress-relieving hand massage every now and then. You’ll relieve tension in joints and ligaments, and a pleasant-smelling lotion offers aromatherapy benefits, as well.

Offer yourself some positive affirmations. Take a moment or two each day to reflect on a task done well or a situation you handled professionally. Reminding yourself of things you did well will help alleviate the stress of a challenge you might be struggling with.

Take your lunch breaks! While this may seem like a no-brainer, many of us are in the habit of eating lunch at our desks or skipping their midday meal altogether. It’s better to get up, go socialize with friends in the break room or even leave the building to enjoy a relaxing lunch.
