Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Federal agents raided Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington home on Monday as part of an ongoing immigration investigation.
Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations descended upon the home of the Minnesota Democrat early on Monday morning, Fox News, ABC News and NBC News reported citing unnamed sources. The outlets said the investigation into Omar stems from her immigration paperwork.
"Today in the Washington, D.C., area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice," a Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement. "This enforcement action is part of an ongoing investigation."
The Justice Department added that the allegations against Omar are "criminal" in nature.
Omar is running for re-election on Nov. 3, as Democrats seek to win a majority in Congress.
There is not a law prohibiting federal law enforcement from taking actions against candidates so close to an election but the Justice Department has long been hesitant to do so as it may appear like election interference.
The Trump administration has been investigating claims of fraud in state social service programs in Minnesota. President Donald Trump claims that Somali immigrants have been behind widespread fraud in the state.
Border czar Tom Homan, who took over the Trump administration's immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota earlier this year, said last month in a Fox News appearance that Omar was the subject of a Department of Homeland Security investigation.
