Former "Riverdale" show-runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is working on a new live-action series called "Afterlife with Archie."

July 21 (UPI) -- Former Riverdale show-runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is working on a new live-action series called Afterlife with Archie.

"To say that I'm thrilled and terrified (in the best way) to be adapting "Afterlife with Archie," the comic series I co-created with genius @f_francavilla, would be an understatement," Aguirre-Sacasa wrote on Instagram Monday.

"I just friggin' love these characters so damn much. In the years since Riverdale ended, they've NEVER been far from my mind and heart, is the truth."

Deadline.com reported that the hour-long, zombie-apocalypse drama is expected to premiere on Disney+ in the fall of 2027.

Riverdale aired from 2017 to 2023 and starred KJ Apa as the lead, Archie Andrews. The cast also included Lili Reinhart as Betty, Camila Mendes as Veronica, Charles Melton as Reggie and Cole Sprouse as Jughead.

Although Afterlife will follow the same characters, no casting has been announced yet.

Aguirre-Sacasa also created the show The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which was a Riverdale spin-off that ran from 2018 to 2020.

Greg Berlanti executive produced Riverdale and Sabrina, as well as Afterlife.
