Oct. 20 (UPI) -- The New York Giants released veteran running back Najee Harris, a league source told UPI on Tuesday.

Harris, 28, had joined the Giants in August. He logged 99 yards on 31 carries over five appearances. The Giants rank 19th in rushing and own the No. 16 offense in the NFL, in terms of yards per game.

Harris' release comes days after Giants coach John Harbaugh decided to split carries in the backfield between four running backs against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J. The Giants lost 34-27.

Harris played just 11 snaps, his fewest with the Giants since Week 1. Devin Singletary (31) and Tyron Tracy (29) drew the most snaps among Giants running backs in Week 6. Cam Skattebo (six) drew the least.

Skattebo totaled a team-high 294 yards and a score off 81 carries through six weeks. Harris' 99 yards were the second-most among Giants running backs.

Phil Mafah is the Giants' practice squad running back.

The Giants (3-2-1) will face the Houston Texans (2-4) at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday in Houston.
