7 Warmer States to Visit During the Winter

If one more trudge to the mailbox in knee-deep snow is too much to bear, fear not. Our glorious, climate-diverse country offers plenty of options for escaping winter’s chill. Grab your swimsuit, a cheap flight, and head south!

Swipe through these slides to discover warm, welcoming cities.

With average high winter temperatures in the mid to high 60s, San Diego is a definite respite from the cold. Leave your parka behind and visit the world-renowned zoo, take a dip in the Pacific Ocean and enjoy an evening of music and dining in the Gaslamp Quarter.

New Orleans’s charm is legendary, as are its brutal summers. But, with daytime temperatures in the 60s, winter is another story. The French Quarter is a must-visit, and you’ll want to hitch a ride on a streetcar, just because. Don’t miss the National World War IImuseum , and you just might spy some gators on a swamp tour.

Honolulu offers spectacular weather year ‘round. Relaxing on palm tree-lined Waikiki Beach with a refreshing beverage in hand, while your friends are bundled up like the Michelin Man back at home is just indescribably glorious. While you’re there, don’t miss the Pearl Harbor National Museum and the Hanauma Bay National Preserve.

Things really warm up in Miami, where winter highs are in the mid-70s. Enjoy an Everglades airboat tour, take in the Wynwood Walls street art, dip your toes in the Atlantic at Bayfront Park, enjoy Cuban culture in Little Havana — you’ll find endless activities to appreciate in vibrant Miami.

The multicultural explosion that is San Antonio delights visitors year ‘round and with high temperatures in the mid-60s, winter is a particularly great time to check out the Alamo City. Don’t miss the city’s famous Riverwalk, where dozens of restaurants await. You must see the Alamo itself, of course, and families might enjoy Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

September in San Juan, Puerto Rico, can get a bit toasty, but in January the weather floats around a balmy 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Beaches, hiking, culture and fine dining beckon visitors. History, too, is on display in this 500-year-old city, which many say is reminiscent of old European towns. To wit, don’t miss Visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, citadels built by Spaniards centuries ago.

Don some shorts and enjoy a hike through Saguaro National Park in Tucson, Arizona, where winter temperatures are typically in the high 60s and rain is scarce. Stroll the beautiful University of Arizona campus, and visit the San Xavier del Bac Mission. Immerse yourself in centuries of Spanish influence, with incredible food and spectacular architecture.
