Viewers will see that Season 1 cliffhanger quickly resolved when the "Outlander" prequel "Blood of My Blood" returns to Starz Friday.

NEW YORK, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Season 1 of the Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood ended with Ellen and Brian -- Jamie Fraser's parents -- declaring their eternal love forever each other just as war is breaking out in their native 18th century Scotland, forcing Brian to decide whether he should fight or flee.

Viewers will see that cliffhanger resolved when the adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's best-selling novels returns to Starz Friday.

"Season 2 picks up pretty much straight as Season 1 ends," Slater told UPI in a recent Zoom interview.

"Ellen and Brian finally managed to escape and be together or, so, they think, until the fiery crosses are lit and they realize that they're going to have to part ways again, which was kind of frustrating, in a way, but we should have expected it because ths is Outlander."

Roy said it is a joint decision between Ellen and Brian that leads him to join his neighbors in the Jacobite Uprisings against the British.

"At the start of Season 1, he's very ready to just be like, 'Come on, we can just be on the run?' And it's, actually, Ellen who's like, 'No, because we're going to be on the run for the rest of our lives, if we do this,'" Roy explained.

"Either option is going to be really bad. So, at least this way, we have a chance to do the right thing and she really does persuade him in that moment to say, 'Right, if we part ways, this is the best thing for us and we will make it back to each other.' So, now these two characters have to be pulled apart again, but they have everything to fight for, which makes for some good TV."

Roy described Brian as a "man of duty" who wants a better life for his wife and the children they will some day raise together.

"Had Ellen not been in the picture, he would still be fighting for his country, loyally, but now he's fighting for the love of his life. He's going to do whatever it takes to make sure that they're reunited," Roy said.

"Whether that means he's put into this leadership position of recruiting all these men and becoming the warrior inside and just put in all these new positions and he just has to do what has to be done."

So, other than Brian, what does Ellen want for herself this season?

"That's a good question!" Slater said.

"Brian is what she wants, really, mostly," she added. "She wants freedom from the life that she was living before. She always felt so confined and controlled by the men around her and by society as a whole. She's a woman in a patriarchal society and it's been really tough for her and, so, I think she's finally found in Brian someone who allows her to be fully herself and that freedom is so beautiful."

Without her husband, Ellen must return home where her younger brothers Colum (Seamus McLean Ross) and Dougal (Sam Retford) begrudgingly share the title of Laird after their father failed to name a successor before he died.

"It's so tough that she's forced to go back to the life that she spent the whole Season 1 trying to escape. But she does it with this dream of reuniting with Brian and starting their life together in mind. That's what really keeps her going," Slater said.

The stars said that filming in beautiful, remote Scottish landscapes helped them feel as if they've been transported to another time.

"It's such a gift as an actor to shoot on location and on a location like THAT because it is so stunning and it does do a lot of the work for you. You don't have to do any imagining. You're really there and you're there in the elements and you can allow that to affect you," Slater said.

"When you add the costumes and the whole production value, like you with your 250 supporting artists in the big battle sequences," she said, addressing Roy.

"It does so much of the work for you, which is a real privilege."

The war sequences were some of Roy's favorites to film.

"It was a dream," he laughed. "It was so much fun running around the fields, swinging a sword for two weeks, doing battle cries with your best mates. It's, honestly, two of the best weeks of filming that I've ever had. It was really great fun. Tiring, for sure, but rewarding, very rewarding."

The flagship series Outlander series ended its eight-season run in May. It chronicled the adventures of Ellen and Brian's son Jamie (Sam Heughan) and his time-traveling wife Claire (Caitriona Balfe), who was born in the 20th century.
