Much of the United States suffers through punishing, record summertime heat that leaves residents at their wits’ end. Being trapped inside day after day is no fun. Take heart, however, because there are places that offer respite from the heat.

The name says it all—Glacier National Park in northern Montana is definitely a cool place to visit. In temperatures that barely hit 70, you can comfortably hike more than 700 miles of trails, where you’ll see alpine meadows, deep valleys, shimmering lakes, and yes, glaciers that are now melting due to climate change.

Visit Seattle in the summer and you’ll be less likely to be drenched by the area’s infamous rains, and more likely to enjoy mild temperatures in the mid-70s. While there, you’ll of course hit the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, but make sure you don’t miss the Museum of Pop Culture and Kerry Park.

For a super summer chill experience, consider Anchorage, Alaska. With daytime highs in the low 60s, you’ll almost forget the scorching heat at home. You’ll enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking and of course, moose viewing. Try your hand at panning for gold; if you’re really lucky, maybe you’ll be able to pay for your trip!

A couple hundred miles north of San Francisco is Humboldt County, where coastal summer temperatures rarely exceed the mid-70s. As you drive north, stop to take photos of the giant redwood trees. In Eureka, charter a fishing boat to try your luck at catching salmon and albacore. Stroll the city’s Old Town area to see charming Victorian buildings as you shop and dine.

Mackinac Island, Michigan, offers summer high temperatures in the mid 70s, and you may even need a light jacket for evenings out. You’ll love biking around the beautiful island, enjoying a refreshing iced tea at the famous Island House Hotel, and learning about the role of historic landmark Fort Mackinac in the War of 1812.

Spectacular scenery and abundant hiking await visitors to the Mt. Washington area of New Hampshire. With an average summertime high temperature in the low 80s, this northern state is the perfect escape for southern residents wanting a respite. While Hawaii’s summer high temperatures in the mid-80s might still be too hot for some folks, residents of the southern United States, fed up with long streaks of 100-plus degree days, 85 sounds pretty good.
