Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Israel said on Tuesday it launched an attack targeting senior Hamas leadership in Qatar's capital, Doha.
The Israel Defense Forces said the Israeli Security Agency "conducted a precise strike" but did not specify the location of the attack.
"Prior to the strike, measures were taken in order to mitigate harm to civilians, including the use of precise munitions and additional intelligence," the IDF said.
Spokesperson for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Majed Al Ansari posted to X Tuesday that his country "strongly condemns the cowardly Israeli attack that targeted residential buildings housing several members of the Political Bureau of Hamas in the Qatari capital, Doha."
"This criminal assault constitutes a blatant violation of all international laws and norms, and poses a serious threat to the security and safety of Qataris and residents in Qatar," Ansari added.
He also said that Qatar has started assessing the strike and has begun emergency responses to aid residents impacted.
"While the State of Qatar strongly condemns this assault, it confirms that it will not tolerate this reckless Israeli behavior and the ongoing disruption of regional security, nor any act that targets its security and sovereignty," Ansari further said. "Investigations are underway at the highest level, and further details will be announced as soon as they are available."
"Today's action against the top terrorist chieftains of Hamas was a wholly independent Israeli operation," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted to X Tuesday. "Israel initiated it, Israel conducted it, and Israel takes full responsibility."
Netanyahu did not mention the location of the action in his post.
"We have seen reports of missile strikes occurring in Doha," the U.S. Embassy posted to its social media Tuesday, and announced it established a shelter-in-place order for its facilities.
"U.S. citizens are advised to shelter-in-place and monitor [the embassy's social media] for updates."
The Embassy did not name Israel or any country in regard to which country was responsible for the attack.
It is unclear if any or how many people were killed or injured in the attack, or the scale of damage caused by the missile strike.
The BBC reports it received confirmation from the White House that the Trump administration was "notified" about the Israeli strike on Doha before it occurred.
