Pope Leo XIV said he will undergo surgery to remove a nodule doctors found on his lung in an announcement during prayer at St. Peter's Square.

Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Pope Leo XIV said he is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove a nodule doctors found on his lung in an announcement during prayer at St. Peter's Square in the Vatican on Sunday.

The American pontiff said doctors found the "localized nodule" during a recent health exam, CNN reported.

"It was detected at a very early stage and is well localized," Leo said in an appearance from the Apostolic Palace. "The doctors believe it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to have it removed."

He said the surgery was scheduled to take place in "the coming days."

The Vatican said the surgery would take place early next week and would require a weeklong stay in the hospital for recovery.

"I entrust myself to your prayers," Leo said.

NBC News reported that lung nodules are small, dense masses on the lungs that are typically benign.
