The Most Expensive Car Ever Made Rolls onto the Scene

Only a few automobile manufacturers would dare produce a $13 million car, and Rolls-Royce definitely fits the build of a manufacturer that would be up to the challenge. The Rolls-Royce Sweptail, originally designed and built at the request of one mega-rich customer, is the most expensive car ever made. Featuring a full-length panoramic roof that extends to the very back of the vehicle, this uniquely designed vehicle took four years to build. The vehicle’s odd design comes thanks to inspiration from Rolls-Royce models of the 1920’s and 30’s.

To create this extra special model, design cues were taken from older models like the 1925 Phantom I Round Door, and the1934 Park Ward 20/25 Limousine Coupé among others. Rolls-Royce says that these older models were, “all considered by today's Rolls-Royce designers in the creation of this very distinctive motor car.”

According to Telegraph, at current exchange rates the Sweptail would cost just over $13M. The gargantuan price tag makes the Rolls-Royce Sweptail the most expensive car ever sold; that blankets sales made through dealers, private sellers and auctions. For perspective, the average Bugatti Chiron is priced at just under $4M.

The creation story of the Sweptail serves as a reminder that if you have the money, a manufacturer will do just about anything for you. Apparently, sky’s the limit when you’ve got the cash.

While Rolls-Royce themselves refused to give the official price, according to GQ Magazine, the estimated $13M price tag far exceeds anything sold and might serve as a point of pride for the luxury auto maker.
