Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Russia has hit two bridges in Kyiv in its war against Ukraine, threatening vital infrastructure in the capital city.
The Saturday morning attack hit Kyiv's Pivnichnyi (Northern) Bridge, the city's Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said. Russia hit the Pivdennyi (Southern) Bridge multiple times this week. Both bridges cross the Dnipro River and connect the eastern and western parts of the city.
Saturday morning's attack also injured two people and damaged a road and overhead trolley wires on the bridge.
Russia said it hit two bridges that Ukraine uses to transfer Ukrainian troops and military cargo. It urged foreigners to leave Kyiv, including diplomatic staff.
The drone attacks on the bridges aren't likely to take them down, but they can damage them and make them unsafe. The damage has prompted local authorities to shut five of its six bridges down for fear of further attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on X, announcing the bridge attack and showing video of a fire on land.
"The Russians continue to turn our infrastructure and everything that supports ordinary life into their targets. This morning in Kyiv, a "shahed" struck the Pivnichnyi Bridge. Overnight, residential buildings, railways and energy infrastructure in many regions came under Russian attack. In Chornomorsk, a drone struck a vessel," Zelensky said.
"Importantly, our warriors always find a way to justly respond to these attacks and take the war back to where it came from. Over the past 24 hours, our long-range capabilities effectively struck targets serving the aggressor's war machine. Our sanctions reached the Samara region, as well as the positions of occupiers operating Iskander missile systems in the Bryansk region. There are new results in the Black Sea," he added. "I thank all the units involved for their precision and systematic work. Russia must stop its absurd escalation."
"The enemy is destroying Kyiv," Klitschko said on Telegram Friday. "It is no longer possible to pretend that we can live as we did in peacetime!"
Russia killed two people and injured three when it attacked a Liberian-flagged ship in the Odessa region, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority said Saturday. Twelve other crew members were safely evacuated.
A Ukraine strike killed two in the Russia-occupied Luhansk region, the Russia-backed governor reported. One person was killed and 10 injured in a Ukrainian drone attack in the Zaporizhia region, Russian authorities said. Russian media also said that one person was killed in the Belgorod region, near the Ukrainian border.
