Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Blake Lively is celebrating her 39th birthday.

The actress has entertained audiences for over 20 years with her versatile roles, from her iconic portrayal of Upper East Side socialite Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl to a surfer determined to survive a shark in The Shallows.

While perhaps best known for playing Serena, Lively has starred in a number of other roles throughout her career. Here's a look back at 9 roles beyond Gossip Girl in honor of her birthday.

'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants'

The 2005 adaptation of the Ann Brashares novel casts Lively, Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera and Alexis Bledel as teenagers and longtime friends Bridget, Tibby, Carmen and Lena.

Also starring Bradley Whitford, Nancy Travis, Rachel Ticotin and Jenna Boyd, the film follows the four friends as they spend their first summer apart. Before going their separate ways, the foursome find a pair of jeans that fits them all perfectly and agree to share the pants.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is available to rent on streaming platforms.

Lively, Tamblyn, Ferrera and Bledel returned to star in the 2008 sequel The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 and have been linked to a potential third film.

'The Town'

Ben Affleck directed, co-wrote and stars in the 2010 crime thriller based on the Chuck Hogan novel Prince of Thieves.

The movie follows Doug MacRay (Affleck), a Boston man who plans and carries out robberies with his lifelong friends, Jem (Jeremy Renner), Gloansy (Slaine) and Dez (Owen Burke). Lively plays Krista, Jem's sister and Doug's ex-girlfriend.

'Green Lantern'

Lively joins the DC Comics universe alongside her now husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, in the 2011 superhero film.

The movie follows Hal Jordan (Reynolds), aka Green Lantern, a test pilot who joins the Green Lantern intergalactic police force after coming across a ring of power. Lively plays Carol Ferris, Jordan's colleague and love interest.

Other cast members include Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Basset, Tim Robbins, Temuera Morrison, Geoffrey Rush, Michael Clarke Duncan, Taika Waititi and Clancy Brown.

Green Lantern is available to stream on Hulu, Prime Video and HBO Max.

Reynolds, who married Lively in 2012 and has three daughters with the actress, went on to star as the Marvel Comics character Deadpool.

'Savages'

Based on the Don Winslow novel, the 2012 action thriller follows Chon (Taylor Kitsch) and Ben (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, two best friends and Laguna Beach, Calif., cannabis growers who clash with a Mexican cartel over business.

Lively plays Ophelia, aka "O," Chon and Ben's love interest who gets caught up in the conflict. Benicio del Toro, Salma Hayek and John Travolta also star.

Savages is available to stream on Netflix.

'The Age of Adaline'

Romance fans can catch Lively in the 2015 film co-starring Michiel Huisman, Kathy Baker, Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn.

Narrated by Hugh Ross, the movie follows the title character, Adaline Bowman (Lively), as she experiences love and loss across the decades after an accident leaves her unable to age past 29.

Oscar-winning costume designer Angus Strathie (Moulin Rouge!) designed the costumes for Adaline, whose story spans from 1908 to 2016.

The Age of Adaline is available to stream on Prime Video.

'The Shallows'

The 2016 survival horror film casts Lively as Nancy Adams, a medical student who travels to a secluded beach in Mexico following the death of her mother.

The majority of the movie's runtime focuses on Nancy's struggle to survive after she is attacked and stranded in the water by a shark while surfing.

The Shallows is available to stream on Netflix.

'A Simple Favor'

Lively and Anna Kendrick star in the hit 2018 adaptation of the Darcey Bell novel directed by Paul Feig.

The film follows Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick), a widow and single mom who befriends Emily Nelson (Lively), the mother of her son's classmate. Stephanie begins to uncover long-hidden secrets after Emily disappears.

Other cast members include Henry Golding and Andrew Rannells.

Lively and Kendrick also star in the 2025 sequel Another Simple Favor.

'The Rhythm Section'

The 2020 action thriller adapts the Mark Burnell novel of the same name and is produced by longtime James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Lively stars as Stephanie Patrick, a troubled young woman who seeks revenge after learning her family's deaths in a plane crash may have been a terrorist attack that was covered up.

The film co-stars Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown.

The Rhythm Section is available to stream on Hulu, Prime Video and Starz.

'It Ends with Us'

Based on the Colleen Hoover novel, the 2024 drama tells the story of Lily Bloom (Lively), a woman who reconnects with her high school boyfriend, Atlas (Brandon Sklenar), amid her relationship with her abusive husband, Ryle (Justin Baldoni). Baldoni also directs.

Other cast members include Jenny Slate and Hasan Minhaj.

It Ends with Us is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.

Lively and Baldoni settled a real-life lawsuit in May following an 18-month legal battle that saw Lively accuse Baldoni of sexual harassment and attempting to tarnish her reputation.
