The 7 Best Board Games for Parties

Getting together with a group of friends to play board games can be crazy fun. It’s more entertaining than simply standing around and talking, and you might just learn some very interesting things about your friends!

Swipe through to see what games are tops for board game parties.

Codenames is a word game where a team leader tries to get their teammates to guess words written on cards the leader holds. The leader tries to give clues that apply to more than one card, so that the guesses might tick off more words quickly. Teams compete against each other to see who can guess the words the fastest.

In Just One, players work together to help a teammate guess a word by offering clues about the mystery word. But if two players give the same clue, that clue is thrown out. This means players have to think carefully to come up with unique clues.

It’s been around a long while, but Pictionary remains an undeniably entertaining party game. Players form two teams; one teammate selects a card and, on a sketchpad, draws a picture of the prompt on the card while the others try to quickly guess what is being drawn.

The goal of Taboo is to get your teammates to guess a certain word you are describing, but there are some “taboo” words you can't say. For example, the word on your card could be “football” but the taboo words include “sport,” “ball,” “touchdown,” etc.

Decrypto is a party game based on decoding secret messages. A player on each team tries to get his or her teammates to guess a three-digit code via clues that correspond to words that correspond to numbers. But the opposing team can listen in and try to decipher the opponent’s code, thus “stealing” the game.

The ultimate trivia game, Trivial Pursuit is another oldie but goodie. Teams take turns answering trivia questions and moving around the game board, trying to beat each other to the finish. Dozens of supplementary card sets related to various topics are available.

In Snake Oil, players take turns acting as a type of customer (cat owner, barber) while teammates try to “sell” the customer a nonsensical product formed by randomly choosing two cards with words on them( like (rumor mirror, or burp balloon)! The customer decides whose pitch they like the best, and that salesperson is rewarded with the customer card. Whoever has the most cards at the end of the game wins.
