How to Stick to Your New Year's Resolutions

Whether we want to lose weight, quit bad habits or spend less money, January is when many folks pledge to turn over a new leaf. If you follow a few tips for success, this can be the year you follow through and accomplish your goals!

Swipe through to learn how to stick to your New Year’s resolutions.

Set reasonable goals. If you’re something of a couch potato, and make a resolution to run 10 miles every day, that’s probably a bit of a stretch. Start with a goal that’s doable—say 15 minutes of fast walking a day. As the year progresses, you can increase your goal.

Limit the number of resolutions you commit to. If you set several goals all at once, you’ve probably taken on too much. It’s best to focus your energies on one goal at a time, and when you’ve mastered that one, you can move on to the next.

Make your goal measurable. Instead of just saying you’ll save more money in 2024, commit to saving, for example, $50 a week, or whatever is reasonable for your budget. Just be specific.

Enlist support from your biggest supporters—family and friends. Tell your spouse that you really, really are going to cut out carbs this time. They can help you plan meals that reduce your carb intake, and help you select items at restaurants.

Pause to acknowledge success. If you’ve made through an entire week without snapping at your whiny toddler, take a moment to recognize the milestone and congratulate yourself. Maybe celebrate with an extra big hug with your child.

Don’t beat yourself up if you’re not perfect. It’s ok to slip, as long as you acknowledge the slip, and commit to redoubling your efforts to getting back on track. Keeping a positive attitude throughout the process is crucial.

Track your progress. Put a big X or a fun sticker on a calendar for every day you resist a bad habit or take a 30-minute walk. Try keeping a journal to record each day’s successes and offer yourself positive affirmations.
